    II. Dân Binh (Militias)
In general the Viet’s people was a tough, brave and cunning people. These specific are suitable for a people who constantly threaten by a huge neighbor (China) in the North and the need to find a better living space in the South. The Viet’s militia is the people army drawn from any able men in war’s time. These people will fight and fight hard for their kingdom.

    1. Dân Binh (Militias)

    Unit description

Dan Quan means militia in Vietnamese. They were a symbol of bravery, fanatic, sacrifice and cunning. Call to arms from anybody when the country is threatening and often draw from the lower class of society. Like the famous poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu wrote in his literary: "tay cam mot ngon tam vong" or "hand holding just a bamboo spear", their equipment is nothing more than a bamboo spear and a bunch of stone pick up right on the field They didn't wear any kind of protection, their training was poor (if there're any). The reason to add stones simply because "cu dau bay" (the funnier words to call stone) was actually used in combat in desperate situation

These men in general tough and have the spirit to fight while still cunning enough to hide and ambush the enemy. Good Vietnamese commanders will look at these folks with keen eyes. Like any militia force they're good in patrol, keeping order and garrison duty (even today militia arms with bamboo sticks still patrol every night for people's security). Unlike most other militias however Dan Quan can (and they actually was) found themselves in the mid of battles rather often! In battle their nasty stone will give the enemy headache (literally not figuratively), they can also used as canon folder or provide support for more professional force or simply boots the number of the army. They will fight and fight hard again any invaders to protect their family and their homeland. Of course these folks will melt away quickly again true soldiers and vulnerable again all kind of missile fire.

    2. Huong Dung Quan (Village Watchmen)

    Unit description:

Like in many countries, each villages or town in Daiviet often maintain some regional troops to keep the order, night patrol, fight again criminal, guarding trade rout or bridge. They're usual under the command of local authority like elder, local official and chieftain. Huong Dung was also act as border guard of Daiviet. In the time of war these men was either in charge to defense their village, support the main army or form a smaller group to fight as guerilla fighter. Recruited from lower class people and sometime old men or retired veteran. Arms with simple wooden crossbow plus sickle and round rattan shield for melee combat.

Though have some training these men are not true soldiers so don't expect them to hold back again professional troops for long. They're best serve in garrison duty and fight as guerilla force along with Du Kich Quan. Received some training, better arms and numerous Huong Dung are somewhat more useful than Dan Binh on the field of battle. Since the land of Dai Viet consists of many jungle and rugged terrain so these light skirmishers replaced cavalry in scout and raiding.
Historically these local soldiers was the once who formed guerilla units especially after the province was overrun by the enemy or abandoned by imperial force. These guerilla fighters though largely fought independently but sometime they coordinated together. And surprisingly though didn’t play a decisive role in wars, guerilla fighters often mistaken as a legend and special trail of Viet’s art of war thanks for their unmatched cunning and annoying!

    II. Quan Ngoai (Regular Troops)

In Dai Viet there's a system called "ngu binh u nong". This simple system was used for very long time (from 11th century until early 17 century) with great effect. Literally any man over 20 ages will be levy into the army. It's mean in the war time almost any man is the soldiers. In peace time however, most of troops which can be 5/6 of the total levy army will be send home to farming and live their normal life in a certain months roundly 8-10 months per year. Then they will be recalled for a military purpose and training. In the second Le dynasty even the Imperial Guard followed this system. This cycle will ensure both economic and security of the state since the country can maintain a large army while still not harms the economic. To made the system run smoothly however the rulers must be a good once and people are loyal to them.

    1. Linh Giao (Regular Spearmen)

    Unit description

Linh Giao mean spearman. Conscription from any man over 20 of Dai Viet's society via the "ngu binh u nong" system. These solid spearmen along with pikeman formed the bulk of Dai Viet army. They're rather well trained and discipline soldiers. Their weapons the overhead spear, the large wooden oval shield and some javelin was provide by the state.

Numerous and versatile these men will fulfill any unspecific tasks from take the fight to the enemy, defeat Light-Medium cavalry, form the defensive line or guard the flanks of the army. Within their limit these man will carry the day. However they are standard semi-regular troopers and shouldn’t be pushed out of their limits or they will break.

    2. Quan Cau Liem (Billmen)

    Unit description

Along with crossbow and bamboo spear, "cau liem" or billhook was a traditional weapon of Viet's people. Viet's Billman like their spear and pike arms brethren was men conscripted via "ngu binh u nong" system. However these men were often choosing from the better and tougher man. Quan Cau Liem also received more training and has somewhat better equipment. To compensate their inability to carry shield they wear paper armor, plus wood mirror outside and helmet

Their weapon of choice the two handed cau liem or billhook is equally comfortable in both attack and defence. Wielding the billhook allows Quan Cau Liem to hack, stab and chop if needed and this weapon proved devastated again both infantry and cavalry. Quan Cau Liem was a typical assault infantry in Daiviet's army. Advancing in good order while hacking away anything on their way, stay in or storm the fortification is their main tasks. Have pike and spear units hold the line while Quan Cau Liem attacking from the ranks or lead the assault. A wise commander will also remember though have good armor it's a waste to have them run straight into a hails of musket fire

    3. Quan Giao Dai (Pikemen)

    Unit description

Giao Dai or pike along with Thuong or spear was a basic weapon in Daiviet's army. Since Vietnam was heavily influenced by China so fighting in solid pike wall was popular long before European brought their army to South East Asia. Conscription via "ngu binh u nong" system these tough and trained pikeman along with spearman formed the core of Daiviet's army. Beside their two handed pike they also carry a short sword (more exactly the large knife) as the sidearms weapon. They also wear paper armor plus wood mirror outside and good helmet for protection

These harden and discipline pikeman is very useful in defensive role. The enemy's infantry will have to pay dearly if they want to break through Quan Giao Dai's pike wall and only fools cavalryman will charge direct into the forest of pike. In offensive Quan Giao Dai can be use as the Battering Ram. Slowly move toward the enemy line and grind them down with their pike wall. Use correctly and give them some support these troops will win the day. Just keep in mind thought have a great strength in the front these man however vulnerable in both flanks and the inability to carry shield also made Quan Giao Dai even more vulnerable again missile fire.

    4. Cung Thu (Archers)

    Unit description

Cung Thu simply mean archer. Recruited from the lower class of Viet's society via "ngu binh u nong" system. These hybrid archers were trained to use the composites bow. Beside the bow they also carried a large knives and a round wooden shield for melee combat. Used mainly to weaken the enemy and support the main army.

Cung Thu played a vital role in Viet's army. Since Daiviet favored the mobility, hit and run warfare so these men also trained to protect themselves and support other force in melee. They're however best use to stay behind the shields and spears of the other units while weaken the enemy from a far. Then they can acted as reserve infantry.

    5. Lien Chau No Thu (Lien Chau Crossbowmen)

    6. Linh Hoa Ho (Hoa Ho Flame-thrower)

    7. Linh Hoa Mai (Arquebusiers)

    8. Than Co Phao Thu (Hand-Cannon Gunner)

    9. Khinh Kị (Light Cavalry)

    10. Voi Chien (War Elephants)

IV Quan Trong (Inside troop or Imperials Guards)
All is parts of Imperial Guard Corps
    All used đầu mâu helmet

    1. Cam Quan (Imperial Guards)

    Unit description:

Cam Quan or Imperial Guards no doubt is the best soldiers Daiviet can field. Choose to protect the Emperor (the divine son of Heaven) and the capital, these men was carefully chosen from the Emperor’s clan himself. Clad in the best steel lamellar armor and equip with best sword, spear and reinforced round shield the royal arsenal can provide. Their training is better than any other troops, their discipline is unmatch. These fearless and fanatic warriors will unquestioning sacrifice themselves to protect their great "cousin".

Cam Quan was a very effect fighting force. Historically even the Mongol horde was unable to beat them. Small in number but these men can make the whole enemy's army run for their life. They're also useful to counter the enemy elite force or protect the generals (and the emperor) as well. However it's a waste and unwise to use them without support. Though superior their number is small and hard to train. Place them in the crucial positions and let them strike fear into the enemy as well as inspire the other unit is the best way to carry the day.

Historically Daiviet's Imperial Guards first established in the time of the First Le dynasty in 10th century. Soon these elite force has become a elite unit of Daiviet's army with the name "Thanh Duc". In 1466, Emperor Le Thanh Tong (Second Le dynasty) reformed the army. The Imperial Guard was given a new name “Cam Quan”. Just like before they're in charge to defending the capital Thang Long and the royal family. The Guard's corps included many divisions or Ve: among them are Cam Y Ve and Kim Ngo Ve. These units were modeled after the Chinese Ming Dynasty Jinyi Wei. The Guards was recruited directly from the Emperor's clan (often from Thanh Hoa the homeland of Le Dynasty and Nghe An province) and few other exception.
