Post tiếp bài giới thiệu về Fallout 3 của Joel Burgess

Sliver Rose Studios, a forum devoted to modding for Oblivion, put up an interview with Lead Level Designer Joel Burgess. For the interview, community members on the site compiled questions for Joel to field. In the interview, among other things, Joel discusses modding, downloadable content and Bethesda office culture. Here’s an excerpt:

“What advice do you have to people that want to get into game design or want to work for bethesda? (Logam)

If you’re in the mod community - that’s a great start. Hone you skills, because this industry is a meritocracy, and technology and techniques are constantly changing. There’s a lot of advice out there about networking and advertising yourself, which is good advice, and important to follow, but all of that is secondary to your ability to produce original, creative, technically sound work. The second most important thing - and I believe this is often overlooked - is having a good personality. Game development is a contact sport, and if you’re friendly, humble, and easy to get along with, a studio is much more likely to see you fitting in with their team dynamic.

For Oblivion, Joel was a Level Designer. Currently he’s working as a Lead Level Designer on Fallout 3. To read the interview, visit here…

Chỉ có Fallout 3 trên 3D , thế các bạn nghĩ nó thực ra là công nghệ gì ?

Fallout 1 and 2, spiritual successors to the legendary post-nuclear RPG Wasteland, have long turned into legends themselves. In 2008, Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion) plans to release part 3 – which will feature first person perspective and action fights, but could still be true to the old Fallout feeling. Jörg Langer talked to Bethesda frontman Pete Hines about skills, story and the combat system.

Jörg: Why did you choose to do the game in 3D? Was is just inevitable considering you’ve done Oblivion before that?

Pete Hines: Certainly the technology we had and could build on was a factor. But ultimately, as fans of the series, we were very intrigued to immerse you in this world. And what is a better way of immersing you in this universe than first person, where you don’t see things in an abstract way, where you can walk up to stuff and touch it? There’s this chair which was like 4 pixels in the original Fallout, and now it’s there, it’s got a surface, you can sit in there!

Jörg: But what if the old Fallout fans do not like it? Won’t they look for the isometric top-down-view instead of Gears of War?

Pete Hines: There are lots of Fallout fans. I’m a Fallout fan! I am personally interested in another game set in that universe, that is true to the kind of game experience that the first two titles provided! I’m not married to the perspective, I’m not married to whether combat is turn based or real time or a sort of hybrid. If you’re someone that believes it has to be isometric and turn based, then you’ll probably be unhappy. But if you’re interested in another game in that great, rich universe, that has great texture and tone and characters, then hopefully Fallout 3 will be something which will resonate with you. At the end of the day, we can’t make a game that’s all things to all people.

Jörg: And of course you want to sell some numbers which would hardly be possible with an old school tactical game.

Pete Hines: Probably not. But we really felt 3D was the best thing to go for, was the best for the Fallout experience. Because I’m really in this world, I’m really doing this, instead of just looking at those characters down there.

Jörg: One thing many people didn’t like about Oblivion was its storyline, which was considered to be rather shallow. Are you planning to do a deeper game this time?

Pete Hines: One of the things that happen when you’re making a game like Oblivion with this massive world and all of these characters and trying to build enough quests to fill it: The one thing you don’t wanna go is deep – unless you want to spend the next 20 years to make the game. You have to apply a certain level of attention to everything in the world, and there is only so deep you can go with any given character or with the story. So what’s brilliant about Oblivion is the ability to literally be able to go to wherever you want to go to and interact with all those people. The world feels much more alive than any game we’ve created in the past of the series. Fallout 3’s emphasis is on fewer NPCs, fewer quests, but much more depth and detail to all of those things. Each quest is about how am I going to do this quest. Every quest in Fallout 3 has lots of different ways to solve it! You can be a good guy or an evil guy or anywhere in between, and that really is what Fallout is supposed to be about: you making these choices, on an individual level.

Jörg: So it’s basically less NPCs, less quests, but more choices?

Pete Hines: Exactly, and more depth. In Oblivion, you would talk to some other player about the game, and you would find that both of you did a lot of different quests. But in Fallout 3, you would talk about the same quests and how differently you accomplished them: “What did you do in Megaton, did you save it? Did you blow it up? Did you do one of those other things you can do there?” Imagine, you can nuke the whole town, and it is gone, with all those people, and all the active quests you had there! Or you could save it. That’s very different from Oblivion where I can be that dark brotherhood guy, and now I am in that mage guild quest, and I can basically do everything. Fallout 3 is about making tough choices.

Jörg: In the demonstration it looked like you would visit Megaton very early in the game. So you meet Mr. Burke, who gives you the quest to destroy Megaton. Is that right?

Pete Hines: Yes, it comes fairly early on.

Jörg: So what happens when you choose to destroy it?

Pete Hines: You get the worst karma score that you could possibly get. That’s the most evil thing you could ever do! That town’s gone – but it opens up ten penny tower, where Mr. Burke is from, which is this different, competing town whose characters are more inclined to people with low karma. You won’t meet them without destroying Megaton.

Jörg: In your hour long presentation, there were a lot of scripted sequences to be seen, for example meeting the Brotherhood-of-Steel-squad and fighting with them against Supermutants occupying a zone in Washington D.C. So will you use a lot of such triggered events?

Pete Hines: Of course, for the sake of the presentation we made sure that we would meet the Brotherhood of Steel. But when you play the game for real, how that example plays out may be very different. Those guys may be there, they may not be there. When does the player go there, how does he go there?

Jörg: Although the crosshairs were right on top of a opponent, you didn’t hit him. Ist that the underlying skills and role-playing system?

Pete Hines: Where bullets go, is based on a die roll, combined from what is your skill with the weapon and the weapon’s condition. That is why improving a weapon’s condition is very important, it gives you a much higher fire rate and percentage of hitting. Normally, the better weapons have a pretty low condition when you find them, so you have to find more weapons of the same type in order to improve it.

Jörg: But will younger players not being used to old fashioned role playing games understand the concept? Or will they say, “what the heck, why am I missing my targets all the time”?

Pete Hines: In the tutorial, when you go through your youth in several steps, we explain about it. You get a BB airgun on your birthday and learn to use it from your father. Ultimately, combat is only one part of Fallout 3. Obviously, it is important, but there are the quests and the skill system and the experience points and how you use them and trading and all that stuff. All that is a part of Fallout 3. So if the dialogue is good and the quests are fun, then you’ll be doing a lot of that stuff, too.

Jörg: The VaultTec Assisted Targeting System — can it be turned on anytime I like

Pete Hines: Yes. Actually, the way we play the game, we sometimes use it as a pause mode just to see where the enemies are. Even if we don’t have any action points to use it to fire at opponents. Because your perception skill determines what other characters are visible to you. You may see it in the 3D world, but it is not selectable in V.A.T.S. mode. If your perception skill is really high, you can even perceive people that are behind a door. So you can walk up to a door, go into V.A.T.S. mode, and detect somebody standing behind it.

Jörg: What is the size of the game world in Fallout 3? You likened it to Oblivion during the presentation?

Pete Hines: It’s about the size of Oblivion, in terms of how much you can go and explore.

Jörg: You plan to finish Fallout 3 in fall of next year – for what platforms?

Pete Hines: It will be Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.

Jörg: And do you have plans to make the PC version harder than the others?

Pete Hines: Not at the moment, but the interface will be PC specific. We had some issues raised on the PC version of Oblivion and it’s interface being less user friendly than the console versions. If we will have differences in the PC version, will be determined when we get well into gameplay testing.

Christopher Krietz nói sơ lược chút về Fallout 3

This edition of Inside the Vault features Christopher Krietz. Chris was one of our best testers on Oblivion, and is currently our QA Lead for Oblivion Game of the Year. After GOTY ships, Chris will be focusing his ninja testing powers onto Fallout 3.

Chris once won a pie for winning a three way race against Todd Howard and Jeff Browne to finish Oblivion’s main quest (during beta testing). His winning time as of the end of the final cutscene and movie: 02:12:29 (difficulty slider allowed, no console cheats).

    What’s your job at Bethesda?
I’m a Quality Assurance Team Lead.

What projects have you worked on?
Since starting at Bethesda, I’ve been on the QA team for several of our titles… Call of Cthulhu, IHRA, Breeders Cup, and many flavors of Oblivion. You gain a fine appreciation for a lot of games out there, after testing a Horse Racing Sim.

As the Oblivion Game of the Year test lead, what is it like testing a game that you’ve already played for hundreds of hours already?
I won’t lie and say each moment is as good as the first few with it, but I can still sit down and enjoy playing. I’ll still find things I hadn’t seen before (I only found out about the giant mudcrab fairly recently, for example), or get into situations that are new and exciting even now. There’s a bit of tedium with it, sometimes… but in the end there is a comforting feeling, being in Cyrodiil, it’s almost like being home.

What do you like best about working as a tester? What is the worst part?
For me, the best part about being a tester is being involved in the production and completion of games — it’s awesome to see the evolution of a title from the initial design up to a fully polished game and knowing that in some tiny way, you’ve had a hand in it. As for the worst part… I would have to say that the worst part of being a tester is dealing with the outside world’s perception of your position. People have some glamorous preconceptions about testing and gaming industry jobs in general, and while it certainly is fun and a great thing to be a part of you only get out of it what you put into it… just like any other job. Which leads me into the next question…

How did you get into the industry? Do you have an tips for breaking in?
I applied out of the blue on a whim when a friend had mentioned that they were looking for testers, while browsing Bethsoft’s site. I have to admit that I was slightly surprised when I got a call, and before I knew it, here I was. As for anyone looking to get into making games… I would think a passion for games first and foremost is important. Be friendly and know how to have fun and be prepared to work hard in whatever field you happen to call home. Be confident and make yourself known but don’t be too persistent, patience is a virtue. Good luck!

What is it like working at Bethesda?
I’d say we’re a pretty friendly group of people, the different teams usually don’t have any problems getting together to discuss ideas and go over problems. Things are generally pretty intimate in that regard, around here… everyone gets involved in some way. Occasionally when they unchain us from the QA Cave and take us on our daily walk, we’ll get to offer our input — in the end, the games are for the fans, which all of us here are.

What is your favorite type of game to play?
I like all kinds of games! Right now, I’m playing World of Warcraft, replaying Starcraft (excited about 2), Crackdown, Oblivion (ironic that I can’t escape it), Guitar Hero 2, GTA:San Andreas (can’t wait for 4), and Civilization 2 (still my favorite). I’ve recently had a hankering for a few other games… X-Com, Syndicate, and some other older titles… I’ll have to break out DOSBox some time.

Have you played any of the Fallout games?
My introduction to the series started with Wasteland on the C64 — at the time I was fairly young and didn’t think much about it as I was playing a lot of the other great RPGs at the time too (Ultima 4-5, Bards Tale, Might and Magic 2, the SSI Gold Box D&D games), but I’ve since revisited it and have greatly enjoyed it. Admittedly, I’ve not spent as much time playing Fallout 1 and 2… I played quite a bit of 1 but never completed it, and never got ahold of 2. I think the whole world of the franchise is great. I find the setting fascinating.

What games are you looking forward to on the horizon?
Tough question, I like trying every game at least once… but I’d have to say the ones I’m looking forward to most are probably Bioshock, GTA4, Blue Dragon, PGR4, Rock Band, Lost Odyssey, and Fallout 3 of course.

What would you say is the best game you’ve played in the last year?
Would you hate me if I said Oblivion? Probably… so aside from that I’d have to go with Gears of War (late 2006 counts right?). It’s one of the few games I’ve played lately that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. My World of Warcraft addiction is still going strong, and Guitar Hero 2 on the 360 was tons of fun, as was Crackdown… but I’m gonna have to give this one to Gears for now.

Other than videogames, what are your interests?
I’m an all-around nerd I think, as for board games, I’m currently playing a lot of Go. I also enjoy pen & paper RPGs (started with AD&D 1st edition, have also played a bit of Rolemaster, MERPS, World of Darkness stuff, and others)… As for reading, I’m currently rereading the Harry Potter series in anticipation of the final book coming out soon, other than that I’ve lately been a huge Neal Stephenson fan… fairly typical musical tastes for my demographic I think, rock, metal, alternative, etc. Just picked up the ‘reunion’ album from the Smashing Pumpkins yesterday, not sure what I think of it yet. I also like to draw, bit of an anime-nerd, I’ve done a little programming… I could go on and on.

    Bonus Round:

Pitch me your dream game in a sentence or less. Go.
GTA meets Crackdown meets City of Heroes — I want to be a free-form superhero in a living, breathing, over-the-top comic-book world.

Finally, time for a rant. Go.
What is it with the vilification of gaming in the media and the political sphere these days? A Class E Felony in New York to sell an M-rated game to a minor? You’re telling me that someone who sells a copy of Oblivion to a high school student deserves the same punishment as someone who assaults a police officer with a firearm, or burns a church, trafficks methamphetamines, or physically abuses a child? Perhaps some folks should reconsider their priorities.

Nathan McDyer khẳng định cấu hình Fallout 3 xẽ trung trung với Obilition 4

Today’s Q&A (questions courtesy of our forums) is with Nathan McDyer. Nate started out as a QA intern, worked his way up to QA tester and is now an associate producer.

    1) What’s your job at Bethesda?

I’m an associate producer of content for Bethesda Game Studios. I mostly deal in trying to figure out how to get all the environment and special effects art that people want done in the time allotted. Basically I hammer square pegs into round holes.

    2) What prior projects have you worked on?

As an associate producer I’ve worked on Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. Prior to that, I was a quality assurance tester on Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow, Oblivion, Call of Cthulhu, Airborne Troopers, IHRA Drag Racing 2005, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Bloodmoon.

    3) What have you drawn on for inspiration in developing Fallout 3? Books, movies, music, etc would be fine, if you don’t want to name any games.

Obviously Fallout 1 and 2 are the main sources of inspiration. Since I’m more involved in the visual look of the game, I look at movies and comics like The Iron Giant, Mad Max, Children of Men, The Hills Have Eyes, Sky Captain, Metropolis, and Tank Girl (the Jamie Hewlett comic not the terrible movie).

    4) How is the work-environment? Is it competitive or co-op? Do the different teams talk together?

Everyone here is a big dork that wants to make great games. It’s awesome.

    5) What is your favorite type of game to play (RTS,FPS,RPG etc)

I’m an RTS junkie. There is a boxed copy of Dune 2 sitting in my cube. Right now Dawn of War is my favorite game series. Nothing beats humiliating people by destroying them with a hot pink and lavender space marine army.

    6) How long have you been playing Fallout, and how would you describe your feelings towards the franchise?

Unfortunately I got in to Fallout late. I was unemployed and in high school with Fallout 1 and when 2 came out Starcraft had consumed my free time. So my first foray into Fallout wasn’t until about 3 years ago, I picked up the first one had a blast with it. Who knew that MacGuyver could be such an evil ****?

    7) Considering that much of the game will probably be in a wild wasteland, do any of you spend much time hiking, camping, etc, and if so where?

I’m prone to melanoma, so I try not to let the sun kill me. The most I do is taking my two wiener dogs out for walks.

8 ) What’s the last game you bought? Did you like it?

Overlord for 360. I can light hills of screaming hobbits on fire and my goblins wear rats for helmets. How could I not love it?

    9) What games are you looking forward to on the horizon?

Like Emil, who is my gamerscore rival, I play just about everything. So here’s an abbreviated list of what I want: Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Enemy Territory, Bioshock, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Assasin’s Creed, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4, Blue Dragon, and Team Fortress 2.

    10) Other than videogames, what are your interests? (Board games, reading, music, etc)

There are too many hobbies that consume my time and income. I’m currently learning to play bass guitar, I paint and play Hordes tabletop miniature game, I have an ever growing collection of 300+ movies, and I read comics.

    11) Have you played the VanBuren Alpha? If so, what were your feelings on it?

    Nope.

    Bonus Round:

Pitch me your dream game in a sentence or less. Go.

Take 28 Days Later, put it on an island city, give it fully destructable environments (Zombies breaking through sheet rock), whatever I can hold can be a weapon, and make me try to survive and escape. My love of Zombies outweighs my love of RTS games.

Finally, time for a rant. Go.

Ok, I’m half Chinese so I have to complain about bad Chinese food. If you know I’m half Chinese and you think the egg foo young, crab

Rangoon, and chop suey is Chinese food, do not take me to a Chinese restaurant. It tastes terrible, especially if the menu is a bunch of backlit pictures above the register. You need to get yourself some hot pepper stir fry or pork with dried bean curd.

Fallout 3 hỏi rõ Todd Howard về sự kiện tại E3

Executive producer Todd Howard discusses Fallout 3's impressive E3 showing and what's next for the promising role-playing game.
    By Staff, GameSpot
    Posted Aug 2, 2007 4:56 pm PT

Official Movie Check out the first Fallout 3 trailer.
    Watch | Download
Fallout 3 had a big showing at last month's E3 Business and Media Summit. It picked up numerous awards and nominations, including GameSpot's Best Role-Playing Game and Best PC Game. That's high praise for an RPG that's due out in fall of 2008, but developer Bethesda Softworks gave an impressive demo. Fallout 3 is set hundreds of years after a nuclear war, and you'll play as a vault dweller, the descendent of survivors who fled to the safety of vast underground fallout shelters known as vaults. You'll leave the safety of your vault to explore and adventure in a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of mutants, monsters, friends, and foes. To get more information on Fallout 3's E3 appearance, as well as more details on the game itself, we turned to executive producer Todd Howard.

GameSpot: By the looks of it, Fallout 3 had a great E3 demo. What did you demonstrate at the show and what was some of the more interesting feedback that you received?

Todd Howard: We showed about an hour of the game, which is by far the longest E3 demo we've ever had. So for a "first look" at the game, we certainly showed a lot. We showed about five different areas in the game and showed off the new combat system, dialogue, and such. Feedback? I was happily surprised that so many press guys were big Fallout fans and really knew the series well. The game is a blast to show off, and you'd think I'd be sick of the same demo by now, but it actually plays a bit differently each time.

Fallout 3 was one of the most impressive games at E3.
GS: What platform was the demo running on? What's the primary development platform? Will there be any major differences among the three versions of the game?

TH: We showed it on the 360, which is the platform we do a lot of the initial work on, as it's very developer friendly and contained…unlike a PC, where even in the office it can be hard to get the same results on everyone's system. That's one area the 360 really excels--awesome development tools. In the end, all three versions (PC, 360, PS3) should look the same.

GS: The Fallout community can be pretty vocal about its favorite game. What's the feedback been based on what you've shown of the game thus far? Have you managed to make some converts?

TH: Most haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if they'd be converted by screenshots or a teaser. Perhaps, but I doubt it. My general impression is they've hated the idea of us doing anything at all with it since 2004, so there's not much you can do about that except make the best game you can that is true to the series and yourself. To any fan that's actually seen the game, like many of the press guys, the feedback's been great…far better than any game we've ever shown. And it's pretty nerve-racking because you work for years on something and then pop your head up like "ta da!" with your fingers crossed. All the E3 awards certainly make you feel good because you really have no idea how you compare at the actual show. But to be called "best in show" so many times…and with hundreds of great games at E3, it definitely gives the whole team something to be proud of…to know we're heading in a direction a lot of people like.

GS: Everyone's interested in the VATS combat system. Can you tell us more about how the system works? For instance, you go into battle, pause and access VATS, target an enemy's body part, and then what happens? Does the game take control from there? Does it automatically pause once combat actions are complete?

Your character's abilities will be determined by a truly special set of rules.
TH: It's hard to describe without seeing it, but you stop time and are allowed to queue up attacks based on how many action points you have. And then you press the "go" button. The actions you chose are then played back for you cinematically--but fast. It only lasts a few seconds unless something amazing happens, like someone's head explodes. Once the playback is done, the camera warps back to where it had been.

GS: We've heard that the gameworld will be slightly smaller than that of Oblivion's. How does it compare in terms of the amount of stuff that you'll be able to do or the number of quests that you can pursue?

TH: It's a shorter and smaller game than Oblivion, and that's intentional. Don't get me wrong, it's still huge. On the quest side, we have a lot less but are pushing more on the quests being solved in very different ways. So in Oblivion, we have good and evil quests, but Fallout is much more about quests that allow you to do both within a single situation. So, [it's] smaller than Oblivion but much bigger than the previous Fallouts.

GS: It's been said that the first Fallout, rather than Fallout 2, was the model that Fallout 3 was built on. What's the reasoning for that?

TH: I think the first one has the right tone, and the ones after it tend to drift. I liked being a vault dweller, searching for water. That was a theme I wanted to pick up on again…someone who's lived his whole life in this out-of-touch underground world, who's thrust suddenly into a wasteland.

GS: It's also been mentioned that the Radiant artificial intelligence system has been improved considerably in Fallout 3. What sorts of improvements are there? How does this translate into better gameplay?

TH: [We're] not talking specifically about that yet. But it is a mix of new features and just us getting better at using the system itself because as is in Oblivion, it's extremely powerful, but only shows itself off in select instances.

This is Vault 101, the starting area of the game and the only home that your character has ever known.
GS: Now that E3 is over, what is the team working on? It sounded like you're almost at the stage where you need to build the rest of the game's world, or are you still trying to iron out all the gameplay mechanics?

TH: We're in full production, cranking out content and features daily. The E3 demo is essentially how our preproduction ends: Here's a big chunk of the game, how it looks, feels, plays, etc. Now we need to make the rest of it. We have yet to balance a lot of the combat and overall gameplay, and that gets tweaked until we ship, but the systems are working enough for us to play with them now.

GS: The game will come out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but PC fans would like to know if there's going to be any support for DirectX 10 graphics hardware or features.

TH: To be determined. You will not need DX10 to run it.

GS: Finally, is there anything that you'd like to say about E3, or about Fallout 3 going forward?

TH: E3 was great this year. I would hate to go back to the circuses of the previous ones. I just want to show the game off and chat with folks, and that was much easier this year. Also, big thanks to everyone here that's continued to support us. We know it's a game everyone wants to see made well, and I hope you give it a shot.

    GS: Thanks Todd.

Level Romania nói rõ thêm về Fallout 3

Finally, let's get back to what really interests you. Will Fallout 3 be the isometric wonder you all wish for? If you belong to those that consider the iso-metric perspective and the turn-based combat system to be the defining elements of the Fallout series, I'd suggest you stop reading now. Fallout 3 won't be isometric and the combat won't be turn-based. In Fallout 3, Bethesda opted for a first-person perspective, but for those who can't live without the holy isometric one, Bethesda also promises to add a 3rd person camera. With a bit of patience and skill and a bit of help from the zoom function, we can only hope the problem of the isometric perspective we'll be at least half-solved.

Another "psychological block" you'll have to pass is the fact that Fallout 3 will also visit the consoles. Console owners will be ecstatic, but the conservatory types will, as usual, wrinkle their noses. Their theory states that a console is not able to support such a complex game like Fallout, and a console owner can't swallow such a game. Nothing more false. On consoles we have Final Fantasy, Jade Empire, KOTOR and the coming Mass Effect, so I wouldn't be too worried. There is still the issue of porting, though. Here the things seem better. They are working at the same time for the PC, PS3 and XBOX360 versions, so the problem of porting is gone. The PC version will be made especially for the PC, so probably the specific problems of porting (like the huge Oblivion fonts) will be gone.
    (...)
Todd Howards declared in an interview that "violence done well is ******* hilarious". Partially I agree with him. If ten years ago we were happy like little children when seeing minuscule pieces flying from a 2-3 centimeters sprite, imagine what you'll feel when blowing-up heads and playing pool with eyeballs, all in 3D. However, the general impression I had from Howard's commentary on Fallout 3's violence is that there's too much focus on slaughter in a game that's part of a series that can be completed without firing a single bullet. The man had too much enthusiasm when talking about blood and limbs flying, and the Fatman, the hand-held catapult spewing mini-nukes, is a proof that things might go a biiiiiit too far. Like any normal person, I sometimes like to blow-up someone's head with a sniper rifle or break another one's hand with a wrench, but still I don't want Fallout to become Manhunt. To each its own...
    (...)
Children? They're there. Will we be able to punish them with a minigun for not doing their homework? I'm afraid not. The developers gracefully evaded the questions about child-killing asked by a more insistent journalist. They answered with a question "...do you really want to be able to kill children?". In an official setting (where each and everyone is an undercover psychiatrist), you can only scream from the top of your lungs "Yes, I do!", so the discussion became a little uncomfortable and moved to safer waters. Like with what little cannons you can't kill the poor children with.
    (...)
So, let's put everything together. Bethesda got their claws on Fallout 3, Interplay held the rights to a possible Fallout MMO and everybody was happy. Except the hardcore fans, who, a year and a half before even the first artwork to be available, quickly drew the conclusion that Fallout 3 will be "Oblivion with guns". I'll refrain from further comments, but if we are to apply the same reasoning, it would mean Half-Life is just "Doom with a storyline" or that Baldur's Gate is a simple Diablo with more words... I say we wait will the autumn of 2008 (I'm a bit skeptical about this one, but if they say so...) and only then start throwing rocks or flowers. I have a feeling Bethesda will have a nice surprise for us. Until then...let's dream."

Chào mừng Fallout 3 đã trở lại ...

    Welcome Back to Fallout
    Todd Howard
    Executive Producer

When we started Fallout 3 in 2004, we obviously had big ideas of what we could do with it, and I talked to a lot of outside people, from ex-developers to press folks to fans. What made it special? What are the key things you'd want out of a new one? The opinions, and I'll put this mildly…varied. A lot. But they would all end the same, like a stern father, pausing for affect – "but do not…screw it up." Gulp. Let me write that last one down a few times.

I'm going to assume that if you're reading this, you've probably read between 1 and 50 previews of Fallout 3 already (they're linked on this site). There's already too much info out there, in different forms and in conflicting ways, for me to cover or correct it all here. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that the information never gets out 100% correctly, and you will certainly never be quoted correctly. For the record, I never compared the violence in Fallout to Jackass, I compared it to Kill Bill…big difference. I also never said "fantasy is riding a horse and killing things," but oh well. Ultimately the game speaks for itself (certainly better than I do). The other thing to keep in mind is that preview comments often circle around the small-footprint sensational elements (Fat Man, toilet drinking, bobbleheads, etc), while sometimes missing the key points of the hour-long demo we give, which are: player choice, consequence, sacrifice, and survival.

Survival is a key theme of the game, not just for you, but for the characters living in the world. The no-longer-simple act of survival, and the uniqueness of it, gives each character special meaning. What has each one sacrificed to do so? You have to find water sources to drink from, and balance your health and radiation levels. There are countless sources of water. Yes, the game has toilets (just like…the real world), and if you want, you can drink out of them. That's a better solution than saying, "sorry player, you can drink all water types but this one." Don't confuse a preview mentioning toilets with what we're focused on.

I hope over the next year you'll come to see this website as a good place to get information on the game, right from us. Please know it's going to be a slow trickle all the way up to release for a few reasons, 1) the game is a long way off yet, and 2) we mess with the game until it's done. If something big changes that we've already discussed, we'll do our best to let you know. Suffice it to say, you should have more then enough info when the game hits the shelves to decide for yourself if Fallout 3 is worth your time and money.

The massive expectations of what this game means to everyone who loved Fallout, RPGs, and gaming-in-general is not lost on us. It's impossible to discuss the game with anyone without them referencing Oblivion and/or the Fallout legacy. In many ways, it's the sequel to both games. It's our "next" RPG after Oblivion while also being the sequel to one of the greatest games in the history of electronics. No pressure. We hear from everybody. If you have an opinion on what/how the game should be done, I guarantee we've heard it. From "don't change a thing, make it exactly like the others" to "I don't care as long as it has mutants," and every permutation in between.

If you know us, you know we work by a few key philosophies, and "reinvention" is one of them. I've seen too many things I once loved fall down the hole of numbing repetition, missing the innovation and flair the 1st one had. We tear down The Elder Scrolls each time and rebuild it, trying to find new ways of presenting the ultimate-fantasy-world-do-whatever-you-want-sandbox game each time. I guess I'm a product of Ultima 4 through 7, where I was at my "I can play games all day" period of my life. I saw Richard Garriott reinvent that game each time, from the interface to the combat to everything else. If any game is going to have the same impact it had years before, it must use new ways of doing it, because time changes not just the technology, but most importantly, the person viewing it.

And that's how we approach Fallout - find its spirit, the feelings it left you with, the impact it had when you first played it, and make that happen again…ten years later.

I also read the old reviews, which is a great way to get insight into how a game made people feel at the time. It's fun to read what stuck out to people back then, not just the world and its choices, but things that may look aged now, but were state of the art then; such as the SVGA graphics, the characters talking with full voice, and the over-the-top death animations. None of that registers now, but for 1997, the game certainly used the latest tricks to pull you into the world.

Obviously we had the old games to look at, and Fallout 1 became our main model and inspiration. I always preferred the tone of it, and it's the one we focused our time on dissecting. We also went through all the original source material, as well as the "Fallout Bible," put together by Chris Avellone, whose work is always fantastic. But one of my favorite sources, when we received everything (yes, everything) from Interplay, is the original "Fallout Vision Statement", back when it was called "Fallout: A GURPS Post Nuclear Adventure." This is the document detailing what Fallout was to be, and is a 14-point bulleted list. Here they are, in order, with direct quotes (enjoy – I know I did):

Mega levels of violence. "When people die, they don't just die – they get cut in half, they melt into a pile of goo, explode like a blood sausage, or several different ways – depending on the weapon you use."
There is often no right solution. "Like it or not, the player will not be able to make everyone live happily ever after. "
There will always be multiple solutions. "No one style of play will be perfect."
The others are: "The players actions affect the world.", "There is a sense of urgency," "It's open ended," "The player will have a goal," "The player has control of his actions," "Simple Interface," "Speech will be lip-synched with the animation," "A wide variety of weapons and actions," "Detailed character creation rules," "just enough GURPS material to make the GURPSers happy. The game comes first." That one is actually crossed out in the document, as they dropped GURPS, and lastly:

    14. "The Team is Motivated" "We want to do this. We care about this game and we will make it cool."

Ten years later and I don't know that I would change a word of what we want to do today. Especially that last one. We have an incredibly passionate and amazing group here; I've been privileged to work with many of them for over a decade. Hopefully in another 10 years people will look back and say, "Nope, they didn't screw it up." Hopefully.

Xăm hình biểu tượng của BOS của Fallout 3 trên cánh tay ... mốt

Ash pointed this out to me this morning. Looks like one devoted Fallout fan (Dr. Online) will forever be a member of the Brotherhood of Steel…as he show his Fallout love on his arm. Maybe this guy can be the next Peter Moore someday, who loved to show his devotion to Xbox games with his tattoos.

Website của Fallout 3 thay đổi , sau 4 tháng làm việc đã có kết quả !

So after, oh, 4 1/2 months of work, we finally got the official Fallout 3 site done and out the door. Todd, Lindsay, Istvan, and I have been working on this thing since March, and finally got it just the way we wanted.

I think it’s a really cool site, probably the best one we’ve ever done. Many thanks to Lindsay for the 10,000 revisions she had to do until everyone was happy, to Istvan for making sure the look and feel was just right, and Natalia for pulling together all the Vault Boy images we needed.

You’ll find lots of links to all the coverage that’s come out so far, screens you’ve probably seen, new wallpapers you probably haven’t, the teaser trailer, etc. The usual stuff, but lots more to come over the coming months.

We wanted Todd to kick off the Diary section with his thoughts on undertaking the task of making Fallout 3 and what that means to him, and us. Here’s a snippit:

The massive expectations of what this game means to everyone who loved Fallout, RPGs, and gaming-in-general is not lost on us. It’s impossible to discuss the game with anyone without them referencing Oblivion and/or the Fallout legacy. In many ways, it’s the sequel to both games. It’s our “next” RPG after Oblivion while also being the sequel to one the greatest games in the history of electronics. No pressure.

    1. Mega levels of violence. "When people die, they don't just die – they get cut in half, they melt into a pile of goo, explode like a blood sausage, or several different ways – depending on the weapon you use."
    2. There is often no right solution. "Like it or not, the player will not be able to make everyone live happily ever after. "

Head over to the new site to read the rest. Drop us a line when you’re done and let us know what you think.

Grant Struthers nói về Fallout 3

Today we talk with Grant Struthers, the artist responsible for my favorite location in Oblivion - Cloud Ruler Temple. And, of course, these days, he is hard at work on Fallout 3. If I could pick any cubicle to visit on the team, I would pick Grant’s. He always has the most crazy looking stuff on his monitors — his test areas are always fun to look at. (Grant and his wife, Clara - who also works here - just adopted a new kitten who had been abandoned at Craig “Claff” Lafferty’s - a producer here - doorstep. Leaving a kitten at someone’s doorstep and running away - who does that? Anyhoo…)

    What’s your job at Bethesda?
I’m a member of the art team and I’m currently responsible for the various special effects in the game. My job covers things like animating explosions, dust, water, fire and the like.

What prior projects have you worked on?

I started my career in game development right here at Bethesda. That was about three and a half years ago, right in the middle of Oblivion’s development. I was primarily a world artist then, working on cities and such. I was given a chance to design a couple of the special effects towards the end of the project and folks seemed to like them. I got the job permanently when I figured out a way to turn a room into butterflies for Shivering Isles. I also contributed a few effects to Knights of the Nine.

    Why butterflies?

Todd spoke, and it was so… much like how a lot of ridiculously hard to do stuff gets put into our games. He really wanted a moment in the beginning of the expansion where the player’s expectations were tossed on end, and then the world of Sheogorath was revealed.

What is the best part about being an artist? The worst part?
As a game artist, I get to build worlds that I can then explore and interact with. There is a certain amount of instant gratification with building an object or space, dropping it into the world, and checking it out in game, as long as everything is working.

As for the bad, sometimes nothing is working. Our job requires us to be creative every day; deadlines count on it. But, sometimes an idea just doesn’t work out as you hoped and a day’s work is wasted. That can be very frustrating and can really set you back when it’s crunch time.

How did you get into the industry? Do you have any tips for breaking in?

For the artist, a strong portfolio is everything. Try to include work that you are really proud of and enjoy explaining how you came up with it. The portfolio is, in general, the excusive thing people look at to determine if you can do the job.

Another thing to try is collaborative work, ideally face to face with other artists. Being able to work closely with other people is very important. Art school is a good place for this kind of interaction. Also, game companies are, at the end of the day, just a bunch of geeks trying to get some work done. When they are hiring, they are looking for people to lend a hand. If you are seriously looking to get a job in games, then your real objective is to prove that you will be helpful.

What is it like working there?
    Dark.

No, seriously, we are completely underground and we have no windows. We all look like cave salamanders. As for the company itself, Bethesda is composed of an excellent team with a terrible habit of building insanely huge games. Everyone works very hard and very well together, but we also tend to get spread quite thin, so it is sometime difficult to keep track of who is doing what. Regardless, everyone is always open and available. Anyone can go directly to anyone else (even Todd) and get the answers they need when they need them. Idea sharing is also encouraged. Just about anyone in the company can bring something to the table and have it at least considered. I think this kind of openness is one of the things I like most about working here.

We are also our own publisher, so while we still occasionally have insane deadlines, they are self inflicted, which makes them better… sort of.

What have you drawn on for inspiration in developing Fallout 3?

For the effects work, more than anything I think I get inspiration from observing real life. Obviously I don’t get to see very many explosions in my usual day to day, but I do find myself staring at things like camp fires or snowdrifts or the exhaust from the car in front of me. I like to try to imagine how these fluid shapes can be believably re-created using our tools.

If I had to pick a single tangible resource that I have used I think it would be the film Trinity and Beyond: the Atomic Bomb Movie. This is the definitive film for anyone who is looking for nuclear explosion reference. It’s also a disturbing look at how close we could have been to something like the world of Fallout becoming a reality.

What is your favorite type of game to play?

I used to see myself as something of a hardcore gamer, but there are many people here who put me to shame. I have also slowed down a bit since college. That said, I’ll play nearly anything other than sports games. I don’t usually select a game because of its genre. I usually try games out that have piqued my interest such as Shadow of the Colossus. Or play games that are recommended by my friends or family, such as Guitar Hero 2 or Burnout. My all time favorite series would be the Myst games and I have a special place in my heart for Starcraft and anything that begins with Half-life.

What is your favorite game from the past year?
Almost certainly Guitar Hero 2. My wife and I haven’t been addicted to a game this way in a long time.

What games are you looking forward to on the horizon?

Let’s see, in the order they pop into my mind: Half-life Episode 2, Assassin’s Creed, Rock Band, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword looks interesting, Crysis, Spore, Starcraft 2 and the new Ratchet and Clank. I know there is more, but these are what I remember at the moment.

Other than videogames, what are your interests?

I have always had a fascination with computers, art, and videogames. For as long as I can remember, these were always the things I did for enjoyment. The great thing about my job is I have combined these all into my work day. So now what to do with my free time? Well, at the moment I’m trying to get use to the prospect of home ownership. Our Thursday night “game nights” have opened my limited understanding of board games up to the greats like Settlers of Catan, and the like. I enjoy spending time with my wife, Clara (another avid game geek/artist/employee of Bethesda.) I still try to fit time in for animating, reading, painting and such. Life has gotten so busy lately; it’s amazing that there is any time left for gaming.
