Well, if you logged on to Facebook on Wednesday afternoon you certainly got a reminder. A serious glitch in Facebook’s algorithm has flooded users’ feeds with random fan messages posted to huge celebrity accounts such as Taylor Swift, Shakira, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and Eminem. More opportunistic users are posting QR codes to their PayPal and Cash App accounts or plugging their businesses and Spotify accounts. Downdetector, a site that tracks app and website meltdowns through user reports, shows a spike in complaints about Facebook from about 3.45pm on Wednesday. The scale of the glitch is enormous because it’s affecting some of Facebook’s most-followed accounts. They include the pages of Cristiano Ronaldo, which has 152 million followers, Shakira, which has 116 million and Rihanna, which has 101 million. The glitch appears to be affecting Facebook in multiple countries across desktop and mobile. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has not responded to inquiries or commented on the glitch. At about 5.15pm some users reported the issue had started to resolve. In October 2021, Meta services Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp went down for almost six hours globally.
