[spoil]Chapter 4:
After the Meruru Stage event had ended, they wondered what to do. Kirino noticed a circle in
the catalogue that she had thought she'd seen before. The emblem of that group(EBS) seemed was
very similar to that of Etna, a high end make up brand from overseas, to which everyone assumes
is a coincidence. It turns out that "EBS" was a distributor for silver accessories, which
seemed interesting enough, so they decided to head for the booth.
At the booth, they run into a cosplayer Sena had previously talked about to whom was a dressed
as a girl. Here there's a rather strange situation for Kyosuke where he makes a cosplay buddy
(comrade? they say "nakama" which I don't think has a good english equivalent). While at the
booth, Kyosuke sees Kuroneko looking at a rosary like chain. However, she was troubled as to
whether to buy it since she did not have any change(500 yen for the rosary, but she had a 1000
yen bill). Kyosuke decides to buy it for her, his excuse was that carrying change was
bothersome thus she accepts it. He even offers to help her put it on which leads to an awkward
silence between them.
Breaking up the awkward situation, Saori asks what had happened to Kirino. Kyosuke begins to
look for her and easily spots Kirino. She stood a short distance away with a nervous look on
her face. He called out to her. She in turn stiffly faces toward him. For some reason, upon
arriving he felt horrible chills run down his spine. It was like deja vu. One year before,
there was a moment to which Kirino had the exact same reaction. The person at the EBS booth
calls out to Kirino.
"It's Kirino isn't?" the person from booth says. She braces her self and rigidly smiles. It was like when Ayase had saw her on the way back from last year's natsucomi.
With a cold sweat running down his spine, Kyosuke asks the person if he's an acquaintance of
Kirino's. The person says he knows Kirino through work. When Kyosuke asks exactly how they are
acquainted through work, Kirino cuts him off and begins to question the person. The young man
apparently came to participate with his circle at the event. Kirino questions whether he was an
otaku, but he at first simply waives it off embarassingly. When pressed further by Kirino(she
grabs him by the collar), he straightly admits to being one. When released, he asks what she is
doing(refering to the choking). She replies by basically telling him to shut up because she's
thinking. Unable to understand the situation, the gang(Kyousuke, Kuroneko, Saori) stands there
in bewilderment. Kyosuke asks the person what was going on, but the young man honestly didn't
know either. He said he wanted to introduce himself, but was told to shut up. At this point Kirino gives him permission. He introduces himself as Mikagami Kouki. 16 years old and a designer of accessories. As he is about to state how he is acquainted with Kirino. She stops him and continues with his introduction herself. She states that is a model and designer that was left in charge of Etanaa's other brand by Misaki(Kirino's manager) and has won many awards since he was a child(bragging for him basically). After some questions for Saori, Kyosuke wanted to confirm that Mikagami was a pretty boy model(he actually says "choubikei" which is like saying super beautiful), designer entrusted with a major brand, and was the same age as Kyosuke. Mikagami flatly answers "yes". Kyosuke asks if it was okay to beat the crap out of him(buttobasu is another term that doesn't translate well, it literally means to send flying). At this point Kyosuke basically goes over in his mind how irritating it is for such an amazing person his age to exist. He is then chastised by Kuroneko who tells him he sounded like a thug. He pauses and then apologizes. As if comfort him, she says he didn't look bad in a way. He thanks her for the compliment which leaves her in silence. Kirino then introduces the group to Mikagami. Kuroneko silently nods when introduced. Saori more reserved then usually acknowledges stating her name. When Kyouske stated his name, it seemed the introductions were over. This part is followed by several pages of Kirino and Mikagami discussing otaku, anime, and erogame. While they discuss this, Kyosuke thinks to himself that his replacement may have arrived and this is a good thing. Or at least he should had felt that way, but he did not know what kind of face to put on at the moment.

After leaving Mikagami, the group returns to the east building to help with the cleaning involved with the wrapping up of the event. During this, Kyosuke realizes how little money there is to be made with doujinshii. He wondered if Fate-san did okay and if Kuroneko had such troubles during fuyucomi. He considered if not just Kuroneko, but other participants that had faced harsh memories while focusing much time, effort, and money at the event. He wondered what is it that they gain from this. While talking to Saori, he over hears Kirino and Kuroneko talking. They topic were the silver accessories. Kirino talked about the one of a kind pendant she had received from Mikagami and how wonderful it was. Kuroneko responded with saying it was certainly overly elaborate that skilled, disgusting otaku were certainly something(She says "osoroshi" here which the connation could be frightening and amazing). She said this as she touched the rosary around her neck, she seemed to be in a rather good mood. For some reason. Kyosuke could not sit well with the current atmosphere. He interjected saying he thought Mikagami was a disgusting guy at first(Hana ni tsuku is a phrase I haven't heard often, if someone knows more about the term please let me know). He at first thought he was rather refreshing, but he was an unexpectedly disgusting otaku. Kuroneko froze at the sound of this. Kirino venomously replies that it was disgusting talking behind someone's back and that compared to Kyosuke, Mikagami was a hundred million times better(Ouch, she really does say that figure "Okubai"). She says that there isn't a single point of his that would win against Mikgami. This flabbergasts Kyosuke. He responds by saying that Kirino talks behind Manami's back all the time. The two get angry and turn their backs to one another mirroring each other.
A few days later....

A few days later, with the madness of natsucomi lingering, Kyousuke laments the end of summer and his last summer of high school life. The roar of the brown cicadas intermingled with start of the 16th of August.
The clock had passed 3 as the sun hung high and shined upon the world below.
Kuroneko remarks on the depressing face Kyosuke has on during their walk home. Kyosuke curtly denies it. Ignoring his words, Kuroneko says she can tell what he is thinking. Acting uninterested, he bades her to continue. "If the guy we met during Natsucomi was Kirino's boyfriend, then my business is done", she said. Kyosuke remained silent. Kuroneko asks if she hit the mark. "Is this because of usual dark power?" Kyosuke asks in return. Kuroneko responds saying that it wasn't necessary. When questioned why, she said it was because she has been looking at him. Kyosuke was flustered by this. He replies that suddenly saying such things would be misleading. She said she didn't mind. Kuroneko had stopped talking, waiting for Kyosuke's response. Hearting pounding and confused, Kyosuke asked if she liked him. She resplied "yes" and that she liked him enough not to lose to Kirino in that aspect. With his mind boiling over, Kyosuke bit his words, took a breath and asked about the time she had kissed him. She in turn was at a loss for words for the question.

"What are you two doing" Kirino calls out from the entrance of the Kousaka residence.

Kyosuke and Kirino were so surprised that they felt as if their hearts had stopped. Though it really wasn't any of her business, Kyosuke couldn't help but breathe in and stiffen.

With a scornful glance, Kirino says 'What are you doing? Come in quickly", and closes the door. A few seconds later, Kyosuke stood there dumbfounded. "Let's go in, Saori should be here soon it seems" says Kyosuke trying to change the subject. As he takes a step in through the door, Kuroneko grabs his shirt sleeve as if asserting that the conversation is not over. She says that there has been something she had been thinking about. When asked what, she says that she doesn't know what to do. Whatever she picks, she feels she will regret and it's the first time in her life that she has felt this way. Kyosuke had no clue as to what to say. Kuroneko continues saying that she eventually decided to take after another person and decided to be honest to herself about what she wants. She resolved to be greedy because that person would not give up on either choice. Kyosuke apologizes not knowing what the conversation was about. Kuroneko says she doesn't mind and to keep listening. She says with no reserve, she will do everything she can to get the outcome she's hoping for. Even though he had no clue what was going on, Kyosuke's heart was still shaken.
The two entered the living room and helped with the preparation for the party. Saori eventually arrives and helps as well . The party should have then started, but Kirino, Kyosuke, and Kuroneko stayed sullenly quiet as they held their drinks. Saori not knowing what had occured, questions Kyosuke about the current situation. He replies saying that he honestly didn't know. Kirino asks what they were whispering about, and Saori apologizing saying she was wondering why everyone seemed so down. Kirino denies this of course. Saori proceeds to hug Kirino into her chest.

Exasperated, she asks what Saori is doing. She replies saying to lift her spirits.

Kirino retorts "AS IF!". Though it does seem to work. Wtih that, Saori had hoped to restart the party.

Kirino interrupts saying that before that she had something to report. She says that she at Mikagami were going out together. So abrupt was this announcement, that the others could only muster a "what?" in response. Looking straight as Kyosuke she declares that they have already kissed.
"WHAT!?" exclaims Kyosuke.

"You..." murmured Kuroneko still overcome with shock.

As if trying to provoke Kuroneko, Kirino says "What? Is there something you want to say?"

Kuroneko stays silent. Kirino elatedly replies: "Nothing? Well let's get the party started!"

However, the happy party did not start. Kuroneko loudly gets up from her seat. She trembled as her fist clenched. Kyosuke tries asking what is wrong, but she jerks away and briskly makes her way to the door. " (I) won't accompany this brat so I'll be going home, do as you will".

Kyosuke observes that this was the first time Kuroneko has ever asserted such hatred towards Kirino.

"What's with her?" Kirino says in displeasure with arms folded.

Kyosuke thought he should chase after Kuroneko. He was at a lost for several moments, but sat back down. He decided to investigate the matter with his sister first. He questions Kirino about her dating Mikagami. He really wanted to ask something else, but strangely that question came out. As if looking down on Kyosuke as their eyes met, she did not answer. Saori jumps in and asks when did they start going out. Kirino says it started just when she had returned(from the US). Misaki-san had scouted her to return to modeling. When she had declined the offering saying that she couldn't decide, she was soon after scouted again by with Misaki who had Mikagami in tow.
"And why bring this up now?" asks Kyosuke.
Kirino's response to this was only a "Hmph".
"Why do you think?" she responds.
"What? This is about you. why are you asking me?" Kyosuke shoots back.
"Oh really?, well, that's true" is what Kirino said as she turns away from him.
"What's with that(attitude)? "well, who I go out with is up to me right? you said it yourself" says Kirino.
"That's right... but have you thought this through?" Kyousuke asks back.
"What is there to think about? There isn't another person as nice as him. Unlike somebody, he's smart, rich, and talent" states Kirino.
It's here that Kyosuke becomes extremely irritated at Kirino who looks down on him as she discusses Mikagami's good points. She states can easily talk and have many hobbies in common. She even says he vowed to never cheat on her.
"He also listens to me and respects me, U-N-L-I-K-E_ somebody!" she declars.
Kyosuke really becomes infuriated here. He even thought at one point he burst a vein in his head. He willfully forces down the arm he was about to hit his sister with. He instead slams it down on the table while standing up.
"Really now! If that's what you say, then do what you want!" he yells.
While sitting on the couch, Kirino looked at her brother with an expression she would have had a year ago.
"What, is there anything else?" she says.
"Like I know..." he replies.
"Really, then I'm going back to my room, I leave the rest to you!" she says as she runs upstairs.

Kyosuke is left annoyed and alone in the living room with Saori.
"It couldn't be helped, let's clean up" says Saori.
Hearing these words, Kyosuke begins to feel guilty about everything that has occured and apologizes. Saori asks him why should he apologize. She states that humans are troublesome beings, days like these happen. She told him to not worry about the party and after they have made up, they would have the party again. She then states that she has nothing to worry about and that she trusts Kyosuke. There's about 2 pages of dialogue here, but basically she entrusts Kyosuke with mending the situation between Kirino and Kuroneko.

August 17, Kirino brings her boyfriend home.... It was rather sudden. Kyosuke had put much thought into a plan for smoothing over the uproar that had recently occured. However, he had no such opportunity to put that plan into motion. That afternoon, as he went to take a drink to the living room, there sat Mikagami speaking to his mother. Mikagami had brought a gift which pleased her. She bade him to greet their guest.
"You there, you're in my seat" is what Kyosuke said threateningly as he casually walked up.
The confused Mikagami stood up. His mother apologizes, questions Kyosuke about his attitude, and demands that he too apologize. Irritated by the situation he obviously didn't. He meaninglessly takes his seat and faces away from them. Unable to do anything, she simply says she'll have his father scold him later(Well, she says okotte morau which means to get angry(for her)). Kyosuke asks where his father was since he knew it was his day off. It turns out father had held himself up in his room. Their mother quite displeased with the father and son was wondering what was going on with the men in their family.
Kyousuke then addresses Mikagami questioning what his business he had there. Flustered, Mikagami tells him he came because Kirino had called him. Kyosuke tells him to answer him straightly because that is what a man would do.

As his mother was going to confront Kyosuke, Kirino slaps him. "What are you doing?" asks

Kyosuke tasting the the blood in his mouth. She tells to get out while pointing at the door. Kyosuke complies roughly getting up and leaving the uncomfortable living room. Hearing their voices after he left, Kyosuke wondered what he was doing. He felt nothing but regret in his heart and remembered Saori's words saying that she would believe in what he said. Thinking of his current situation and for the sake of redoing their party, he began to move.

Kyosuke ended up in front of his parent's room. Inside was his father that wouldn't come out. He knocked on the door and calls out to his father.
"... Enter" replies a voice.
Kyosuke neverously entered. His father bade him to sit. He sat at the table facing his father. Kyosuke is asked why he was there. He replies that he was thrown out of the living room. The two have a back and forth about why his father had not gone down to see his daugther's boyfriend. But, the two could agree that what was going on in their living bothered them. The two briefly bad mouth Mikagami. Kyosuke then asks what kind of person his father would have liked for Kirino.

He replies "A kendo and judo practioner that's kind, sometimes strict and for the sake of justice will stand up to evil. He should been brawny and look good in japanese style clothes as well".
There was no such person Kyosuke had thought. His father asks Kyosuke if he was acquainted with the suspicious young man. Kyousuke replies that it is his second time meeting.
"What kind of person is he?" asks his father, of course he couldn't help but wonder what kind of person his daughter brought home.
Kyosuke honestly answered saying he thought Mikagami was someone that tried his best and didn't seem like a bad guy and that Kirino could easily talk to him. Acknowledging this, His father says that Kirino is still in middle school and that it's too soon for her. Kyosuke responds saying that's how middle schoolers are presently and that it's not too soon. His father grew dark and angry at this.
"Kirino is still a child" said his father.
"And she's more reliable than anyone else" responds Kyosuke.
His father did not reply.
Kyosuke tells him that even though she's still a middle school brat, whether she goes out with someone or not, it's up to her to decide and she is capable of doing it. Taking a stiff drink his father tells him he didn't have to be told that.
"Do you approve Kyosuke?" asks his father.
Kyousuke did not answer right away. He should have said he approved. He had no reason to be against it. Even though he really didn't like it and his irritation with it could not be put into words he said it was up to Kirino.
"I am against it" said his father with arms folded.
"... Pops, that's pretty unreasonable. Let her decide what to do" says Kyosuke.
"I don't wanna"(He says "iyada" here which is pretty childish) replies his father.
A rather unexpected development begins to unfold before Kyosuke.
"Kirino having a lover...? The thought if it makes me furious..." says his father.
Kyosuke understood this all too well, but it that was no excuse for being unreasonable. "Kyousuke, go break them up and return" says his father.
"No, no, no, no" replies Kyousuke. What his this person saying he thought.
"th-there's.... no reasoning in that no matter how you look at it" says Kyousuke.
"The hell I'd know! There hasn't to be something! ....damn. Of course, I'll punch him 2 or 3 times. The conversation should start from there" says his father.
"You'll lose your job for assault!" exclaims Kyosuke.
" I don't care" replies his father.
"Care about that!" replies Kyosuke.
He finally understood why his father stayed in the room. If the young man were here, his father would impulsively beat him.
"Anyway, I'm against it! against it! against it!" says his father completely drunk.
When his father had calmed down, Kyosuke had honestly thought as to what kind of doting parent this was.
"I understand" says Kyousuke.
"wh-What is it that you understand?" asks his father.
"I'll go in your place to speak to Mikagami and punch him 2-3 times" replies Kyosuke.
"Do you think I'd be satisfied with that?" asks his father.
"Yeah" answers Kyousuke stating that they both felt the same way.
Kyosuke returned to the living room. His mother was nowhere to be seen. As he stepped in, Mikagami gazed in bewilderment of the approaching Kyosuke. Before Kirino could finish asking what Kyosuke was doing, Kyosuke bowed before her and apologized. Kirino is caught off guard by this and tells him with voice shaking that it'll only trouble her more by doing this and to just leave. Kyosuke got up saying that before he left he had something to say. Kirino protested saying there was nothing to talk about. Kyosuke reponds saying that unfortunately he did have something to talk about.
"Yesterday, you asked me what I wanted you to do..." says Kyosuke.
Kirino did not respond.
"I said something along the lines of "you should decide", but I take that back" says Kyosuke.
"Wh-what?" replies Kirino.
"What I want you to do... is to not go out with guys.." says Kyosuke.
He knew this wasn't something to say to his sister in front of her boyfriend, but he said it.
"... why?" asks Kirino.
"Why indeed, I don't know" says Kyosuke.
"It's vexing maybe, like some strange guy is taking my sister away" replies Kyosuke.
He tells Kirino that as her brother he wouldn't tell her that he wouldn't accept her having a boyfriend. He had to consider her feelings and he wouldn't like it either if the rolls were reversed. Thats why he said the things he did. Although he couldn't properly express himself, as if with something on her mind, Kirino listened.
"Whether you go out with anyone or not, It's up to you. As your brother, I have no excuse. Yesterday, I don't know why I got so angry, but because of that, I don't know how I can apologize for it. It would be easy to just say I'm sorry, but to apologize isn't something like that. So I thought I'd honestly tell you what I thought." says Kyosuke.
"... late" murmurs Kirino.
"What?" says Kyosuke.
"too... late.." says Kirino.
The room became quiet and an uncomfortable atmosphere set in. Kyosuke realized he had to properly speak with Mikagami. He asks Mikagami if loved Kirino. Mikagami replies saying that he really does and respects her while gently smiling. Kyosuke thought of all the reasons Mikagami would be right for her. Being rich, talented, sharing interests and even being someone she could brag about to her school friends. He should give his blessing ---
"I ain't giving Kirino to you" is what Kyosuke said.
Without realizing he stood facing Mikagami speaking from the heart.
"If you want to go out with her, you'll have to prove to me that you'll have to prove you can treasure her more than I do!(He says taisetsu ni shite, which I find hard to properly translate)" proclaims Kyosuke.
The jealousy within him deepened. He knew it was ridiculous, but he went beyond the point of return. He really didn't know what he wanted to do, but he pointed Mikagami.
"Unfortunately for you, I definitely treasure her more than you, that's why I will not hand her over!" states Kyosukue.
"...If you do not approve, you will not hand over your sister?" asks Mikagami.
"Yes! It doesn't matter how great a person you are... I worry about her, to the extent where it can't be helped. If that bothers you then alieve that worry from me!" declares Kyosuke.
When he had finally said it, he was relieved, but at the same time extremely embarassed. He finally confessed his real thoughts. The thought of giving up his cute sister to some guy made him angry and lonely at the same time.
"...You..." says Kirino
. Kyosuke apologizes in to her in his mind for making the situation awkward for them and considers how it would not be uncommon for her to hate him for the rest of his life. He was prepared for that. The room was quiet. After several seconds, Kirino spoke first.
"....like that...." said Kirino.
"A plain guy like you.... flirting with the black one(refering to kuroneko) like that! Don't say things like that as you please!" yells Kirino as she slaps him hard.
"A problem with it.... of course I would!" she says before throwing the cake Mikagami brought at Kyosuke.
She began pounding at his chest. "You idiot! idiot!" she exclaims.
She continued to hit him. Cups were knocked down and juice had spilled all over.
The place was becoming a mess, but he did not think to stop her.
"That time when you made such a disgusting face like that! Why now!? Why say all this?" said Kirino.
The feelings came out like a muddy stream, but Kyosuke could not connect the meanings between them.
"What are you talking? Manami and Kuroneko have nothing to do with this!?" exclaims Kyosuke. "They do!" reponds Kirino as she loses her composure crying heavily.
"It was a lie! Going out was a lie! We didn't even kiss....! It was all a lie!" says Kirino.
She seemed to have exhausted all her strength confessing that. While Kyosuke was lost as to what was happening. It took several seconds for him to register to the meaning to his sister's words.
"Isn't it great...Kirino" says Mikagami with his out of place gentle smile.
"what... do you mean?" asks Kyosuke.
As if he didn't hear Kyosuke, Mikagami faces Kirino looking a little sad and offers her a handkerchief.
"It looks like my job is done... right?" he says.
"It... looks like it.." replies Kirino.
Kyosuke faces Mikagami while completely confused. Mikagami reiterates that everyone was just a lie. Which shocks Kyosuke even further.
"Wh...y?" asks Kyosuke.
Kirino did not respond.
"well... she wanted you to notice her" says Mikagami.
"That's not it!" interjects Kirino.
"Then why? asks Kyosuke. "that's... that's.." said Kirino trying to respond.
Her words could not come out it seem.
"You... you.." said Kirino attempting to explain with her expression painful.
At this point, Kyosuke gave in, he couldn't take it anymore.
"It's fine" he said. "You don't have to say it" he continued as he put his hand to her
head patting it
. "What... are you... doing?" she asks.
"A brother's duty..." he replies.
For the sake of fluidity, the story continues. Having made his sister cry, Kyosuke nervously idled about.
"Kyousuke!? Y-You!?" yells their mother.
She had returned from shopping with terrible timing. From her view, the room was a mess, her daughter's boyfriend stood there with a troubled expression, Kirino was crying, and standing next to her was Kyosuke who had earlier been kicked out of the room.
"Wait, mom, there's been a misunderstanding!" says Kyosuke with almost no persuasive power. "Misunderstanding? what is there to misunderstand? You do know the difference between right and wrong don't you!?" exclaims his mother.
"To think... to think.." she goes on. "THAT YOU WOULD LAY YOUR HANDS ON YOUR OWN SISTER!?" she yells.
"What!?" exclaims Kyosuke. "Don't try to play dumb you brute! I heard from the lady next door. The two of you were were happily walking arm in arm in front of the station a while ago were you!?" she says.
"To think that siblings would be in a love triangle....!! No! I will not allow it!" she continues.
"It's a misunderstanding!" says Kyosuke trying to explain.
"Well why is Kirino crying? It's because you isn't it!?" she asks angrily.
'Well yes, but it's different!" Kyosuke couldn't find away out of the situation. He realized the only way was to apologize profusely.
After sorting out the situation with his mother(though it seems she punched him rather hard in the process), he was walking with Mikagami part way home. Mikagami basically explains that he can't be with Kirino cause of his own baggage and that he was at first sent to convince Kirino to change her mind. He also tells him that Misaki knew that Kirino and Kyosuke were siblings because fo the way they acted. He left off he'd report to Misaki that he wasn't able to break the two up and that the next time he comes over it'll be as Kyosuke's friend.
All that was left at this point was for Kirino and Kuroneko to make up. He resolved that it was not his place to do anything there. That night, his father happily drank and Kirino had a long phone conversation with Kuruneko. After hanging up, Kirino informed Kyosuke that the party would be the day after next.
He later contacted Ayase with the results of his investigation for her.
"Kirino doesn't have a boyfriend" he told her.
"Oh, well that's good" she says sounding quite relieved.
He then questions how Ayase had acquired the purikura picture since he still had his and Kirino had thrown hers at him during their fight. She asks if Kyosuke had properly inspected the thrown purikura picture. He said he did not. She then tells him that it's fine and nothing to worry about.

Finally, he calls out Kuroneko. She sat on a bench waiting. When she had realized he was near,

she said "I've been waiting".
"Yeah" was his response.
"Did you make up with Kirino" he asks.
"yes... yesterday, over the phone. It seems I made you and Saori worry" she says.

"Then... what does "lifting the curse" mean?" he asks.
"It means a more powerful curse would overwrite the current one" she replies.
So then, Kuroneko says the words to the world's most powerful, old, and terrifying curse. "Please go out with me" she says.
