Hi guys, In the next month, I got to make a quite important decision about my career. Hope you guys can give me some of your thoughts I have been working in an FMCG company as an assistant to a brand manager since September 2013, so at the end of next month, my one-year contract will end and with this performance of mine, I’m quite sure that it would be extended for at least another year But honestly speaking, I don’t really enjoy what I’m doing, which involves a lot of list-making and working with irresponsible people (some are real assholes though) I have an Uncle who is working for a Digital Marketing company of Singapore, which has offices in 5 Asian countries, including Vietnam; and he’s the Manager of the Vietnam office. He gave me the inspiration (well high salary and shit) to go big in Digital Marketing and Web Services. After Tet 2014, I started doing a lot of reading and research about this field and became very interested in it. I even took evening courses after work. Back to my main problem. I have 2 choices: 1/ Continue working in this FMCG company: + Pros: have monthly income (not high but enough for me to stop being a financial burden to my family), have more experience about FMCG field, have a good-looking background (2 years working in a big FMCG company), have opportunities and connections that can give me information about openings in other departments. + Cons: have to continue doing what I don’t like, not having enough time to enrich my knowledge on Digital Marketing (there will be a shitload of work after my contract extension – that is if I decide to continue working haha ). 2/ Quit this company, find a job in a Digital Marketing firm + Pros: can do what I like, devote 100% of my time to prepare myself with all the knowledge and experience for my plan to go professional in this field. + Cons: salary may be lower than current one, background may not look as good. (the pros and cons of this option 2 are a big NOT SURE though, and even SO NOT SURE if I could find a job if I quit this one ) Now give me your opinions, guys. (Haven’t post anything this long for a while, so I gotta say thank you for your time!)
nobody cares about you XD j/k what are the specific amounts you can make at those places? digital marketing is pretty competitive as far as I know
Monthly, I am making 6 mil from my salary and another 4-5 mil from being a content manager for 2 websites (an easy part-time job). That's not much but I think is acceptable at this point. Ppl in the office say that the company is going through a tough time, therefore it employs most new employees through a third-party company to reduce the cost. I am one of those cases. While official employees of the company get a 12mil minimum monthly wage, we non-officials (often regarded to as extra-casuals) only get about half as much (some girls I know only get 5 or even 4 mil lol I think I'm quite lucky) A few companies have been calling me for interviews, I think I will take some chances with them Another reason I wanna go for Digital Marketing is that I will go abroad in a few years' time - actually Canada . So if I am good enough in Digital Marketing I think it would be easier for me to find a job in other countries for that is kind of needed everywhere right?
Yea it makes more sense cuz FMCG are needed everywhere. Anyway I'll still be here for another month so let's see. And Xeno, I don't know if this is any of a sensitive question but as you have been in Canada for a long time, I wanna ask if you know much about the ways a person can come to Canada and apply for citizenship there after a period of time. I did some research but only found one way is to find a scholarship to get there to study, then stay to work for a while and apply for citizenship (a program in Manitoba as I remember - I did this research quite a while ago). Otherwise it would cost a lot.
best way is to get a job offer there, work for a year or two and you are set there are other ways but they all are unreliable and expensive ^^
Ahh okay. I still have a long way ahead then. Thanks Xeno, see you in Canada in a not-so-near but hopefully-not-so-far future
wwhat have you decided in the end? I'd say go with the stable option, being continue at your job. You can still decide further on about quitting.
After some consideration, I'm quitting cuz 1. I can't do this anymore, I've been doing it for a whole year hoping to see chances for my career path but now if I continue, I will be doing it for another year and 2. I've already got a job offer with a company for something I will enjoy doing. I am currently working for Unilever in case anyone is wondering
Great, do what you like and like what you do. If you still work for FMCG, i think you will more and more stress, and your career path is going down.
