    ABOUT EMPIRE: TOTAL WAR

Dominate the 18th century on land and sea. Command the seas, control the land, forge a new nation, and conquer the globe. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in Empire: Total War.

Empire: Total War introduces a host of revolutionary new features, including true 3D naval combat. For the first time in the Total War series, you will be able to intuitively command single ships or vast fleets upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board, taking control of your men as they fight hand-to-hand on the decks of these wooden behemoths.

In addition, Empire: Total War will see further enhancements to the Total War series’ signature 3D battles and turn-based campaign map. Real-time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare. And the Campaign Map for many, the heart of Total War — introduces a variety of new and upgraded elements, including new systems for Trade, Diplomacy and Espionage with agents; a refined and streamlined UI; improved Advisors; and a vastly extended scope, taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and, for the first time, the untapped potential of the United States of America.

    - Take command on the high seas. New real-time 3D naval warfare takes Total War's unparalleled battle action to the high seas, with players commanding single ships or vast fleets.

    - Become a founding father. Starting in 1700 — The era of warfare across oceans, revolution and the founding of the United States.

    - All new graphics engine and technology features staggering real-time seascapes, new advanced landscape and flora systems, and dynamic weather.

ABOUT EMPIRE: TOTAL WAR - SPECIAL FORCES UNITS & BONUS CONTENT

In a time when a soldier's life could be given easily and quickly, it took extreme courage and determination for a true hero to forge a reputation for themselves.

Whether through harsh and highly disciplined training, generations of successful military tradition or world-leading technology, the Empire: Total War Elite Units are among the very best of the best.

The Special Forces Units introduces six of the most influential military forces of the 18th Century. True to the period, these exclusive elite units become available on the campaign map via a certain faction or once a specific geographical region is under control. This pack also includes three more exclusive Elite Units, previously unavailable for sale.

Each elite unit brings with it the potential to open up dramatic new strategies and turn the tide of your campaign. A cornerstone of your Empire's land or naval forces, each has the potential to be used to decisive and devastating effect.

Empire: Total War Special Forces Units & Bonus Content consists of the following premium content for aficionados of the Total War series. This content is for use with Empire: Total War. Once Empire: Total War is installed the elite units will become available in the single player game under the conditions stated below.

    - HMS Victory —
The Royal Navy's most distinguished and formidable first rate ship of the line; Lord Nelson's 104 gun flagship is one of the most heavily armed ships of the 18th Century. This unit is available when playing as the British faction and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

    - Rogers' Rangers —
Major Robert Rogers' company of rangers are highly trained elite light infantry, specializing in reconnaissance and special operations. They are extremely mobile in even the most challenging environments. This unit is available when playing as the British faction and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

    - Ottoman Organ Gun —
A viciously powerful field gun, able to inflict incredible damage on the opposing army. Emphatic proof of the Ottoman Empire's advanced knowledge of gunpowder and firearms technology. This unit is available when playing as the Ottoman faction and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

    - Ghoorkas —
"Better to die than be a coward" has been the motto of these elite Nepalese soldiers for centuries. Disciplined, tough and courageous, they carry a deadly 18-inch long, curved knife known as the kukri. This unit is available when controlling the Kashmir territory.

    - Corso Terrestre Guerillas —
An independent light infantry guerrilla regiment, experienced in skirmish and stealth tactics. Surprise raids and ambushes are the guerillas' favored tactics, a way to compensate for their limited number and light armor. This unit is available when playing as the Spanish faction and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

    - Bulkeley's Regiment —
A French unit of Irish mercenaries with a fearsome reputation for hardiness. Exceptionally tough and resilient, they make for a highly flexible and dependable regiment. This unit is available when playing as the French faction and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

As of October 2009, this DLC also includes the following units, previously unavailable for sale:

    - Death's Head Hussars —
The Prussian army's bravest and fiercest cavalry is trained to deliver devastating volleys of musket fire while closing on the enemy. These daring charges strike fear into even the most stalwart of opponents. This unit is available when playing as Prussia and your technology has sufficiently advanced.

    - The USS Constitution —
The legendary heavy frigate of the United States Navy, used to great effect in capturing enemy ships and running down fleeing opponents. Fast and heavily-armed, the pinnacle of 18th Century US Navy power. This unit is available when playing as the USA and your technology has sufficiently advanced. It may also be captured by opposing factions.

    - The Dahomey Amazons —
An elite female-only military regiment from West Africa. Disciplined both in rifle drills and close combat, they are rightly feared for their incredible courage and their practice of decapitating their captives. This unit is available when holding territory in North Africa.

    - DLC Elite Units of the West - Version 1.5.0 build 1330:

Expand your Empire with downloadable content! The Elite Units of the West Downloadable Content for Empire: Total War™ introduces 14 completely unique brand new units from all the major Western factions. Featuring all new infantry and cavalry units, equipped with the best weapons and having undergone the most rigorous of training, the Elite Units of the West DLC is the perfect addition to your Empire's army and will bring even more options on the battlefield to all tacticians seeking to defeat their enemies.

Once you've purchased the content, you will unlock all new 14 Elite Units of the West in the single player campaign under the conditions below. They will also be available in multiplayer and single player battle modes, when playing with the appropriate faction.

    - Hungarian Grenadiers (Austria) —

Hungarian Grenadiers fought in the Austrian army of the 18th century and were deliberately selected for their physical size and stature. They had to have a good throwing arm, being able to propel a grenade far enough that it wouldn't kill them!
Single player campaign requirements: Military Governor's Barracks in Hungary

    - Horse Guards (Britain) —

The elite British horse guards are a heavy cavalry shock troop used by the British army. Used as a battering ram to brutally smash enemy infantry lines and drive holes in enemy ranks, these were prized troops of the British army.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Staff College in London

    - Swiss Guards (France) —

The Swiss Guards fought for the French nation and were the prized palace guard of Louis XVI. Wearing resplendent bright red uniforms and carrying smooth bore muskets they were a better calibre of heavy infantry than most of their opponents.
Single player campaign requirements: Palais Bourbon in Paris

    - Blue Guards (United Provinces) —

The Blue Guards are a strong infantry unit of the United Provinces, and have been personal bodyguards to kings since the 1600s. These are a high status regiment with a long tradition of fighting and winning key battles.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Staff College in Amsterdam

    - Gardes du Corps (United Provinces) —

The Gardes du Corps were the strongest, and often, the last line of defence for many monarchs in the United Provinces. Dressed in splendid uniforms and riding heavy horse these royal bodyguard soldiers specialised in almost unstoppable charges and benefit any army with a high morale and solid combat discipline.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Staff College in Amsterdam

    - Guard Grenadiers (Poland-Lithuania) —

The Polish Guard Grenadiers are a highly trained and well disciplined grenadier unit unique to the Polish army. These troops spent years being properly trained in the correct stances for priming and throwing explosives and were constantly assessed on their appearance and discipline as well as their technique.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Staff College in Warsaw

    - 2nd Hussars (Prussia) —

These light cavalry units were specially drawn for their shorter stature and low weight making them quick and nimble on the battlefield. Ideal for hit and run attacks and ambushing enemy formations on the move, these fast and mobile hussars specialised in running down survivors and ambushing scout parties.
Single player campaign requirements: Brandenburg Gate in Berlin

    - Bosniaks (Prussia) —

Prussian Bosniaks are an irregular mounted soldier on light horse capable of a devastating charge. These riders are historically mercenary in nature hailing from the Balkans as their name suggests. They fight with a passion and zeal as they were often paid in plunder!
Single player campaign requirements: Army Board in Prussian home regions

    - Frei-Korps (Prussia) —

These irregular light infantry forces are a much needed counter-weight to the disciplined and organised ranks of the Prussian army. Professional scoundrels, they are particularly effective against soldiers that organised Prussian infantry find difficult to counter.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Board or Military Governor's Barracks in any province

    - Gardes à cheval (Russia) —

An aristocratic heavy horse unit drawn from the nobility, exclusively to protect the Tsars. These rich notables were selected not for their soldiering ability but more for their relative attractiveness to Catherine the Great.
Single player campaign requirements: Winter Palace in Moscow

    - Siemenovski Foot Guards (Russia) —

These elite line infantry were far better equipped than their standard brothers and a touch more arrogant too. With splendid uniforms and far better trained they made excellent garrison soldiers, punishing popular decent harshly.
Single player campaign requirements: Winter Palace in Moscow

    - Walloon Guards (Spain) —

These superior infantry were drawn from a region of the Spanish Empire that produced excellent soldiers. Their distinctive uniforms and colours marked them out on the battlefield as the bodyguard of kings and queens, and as effective soldiers in their own right.
Single player campaign requirements: Palacio Real de Madrid in Madrid

    - Legion of the United States (United States) —

The United States first official organised army unit. A well drilled and trained unit of soldiers taught to fight in both the traditional European line of battle style, and a looser more irregular pattern better for confronting the native tribes of the Americas.
Single player campaign requirements: Army Board or Military Governor's Barracks in any province

    - US Marines (United States) —

These are some of the toughest and bravest soldiers the United States can boast. Either on land or at sea this unit is a fighting force above all else. The marines' greatest strength alongside their flexibility and speed in combat is their resolve. They will rarely if ever run from a fight once committed, often preferring to fight to the death than hand an inch of ground to the enemy.
Single player campaign requirements: Naval College in any province

    - DLC Elite Units of America - Version 1.5.0 build 1332:

The Elite Units of America Downloadable Content for Empire: Total War™ adds 15 new elite units to the American, British and French factions of Empire: Total War. In the last half of the 18th century, the political upheaval from thirteen of British Colonies in North America ultimately led to the 1776 Declaration of Independence and changed History for ever. The 15 units from the Elite Units of America Downloadable Content have all played a major part in the American Revolution. Though their background owes a lot to European military traditions , their identity is tied to the destiny of the United States, and gave these men courage and audacity like no other soldier on the battlefields.

Once you've purchased the content, you will unlock all new 15 Elite Units of the West in the single player campaign under the conditions below. They will also be available in multiplayer and single player battle modes, when playing with the appropriate faction.

    - 1st Delaware (United States) — These soldiers carry muzzle-loading, smoothbore muskets firing lead balls as wide as a man's thumb. These are inaccurate weapons, effective only to around 200 paces when fired in volleys. The ability to fire and reload with machine-like regularity with comrades falling all around is what wins battles; that and an ability to fight in a variety of tactical formations. Any enemy foolhardy enough to charge their cavalry at this unit while they are in square will find them a tough target.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in Pennsylvania

    - 1st Maryland (United States) — By their very nature, line infantry are vulnerable to bombardment from artillery and sniping from skirmishers; it takes a special kind of courage to stand and carefully fire volleys at the enemy then dispatch them with a bayonet charge. Extensive drill, training and battle have helped mould these men into soldiers, capable of dealing with the enemy on equal terms.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in Maryland

    - 2nd Continental Light Dragoons (United States) — When a friendly unit is being harassed by an enemy beyond its fire range, these cavalrymen can react immediately, riding to the enemy to counter the threat. When mounted they are good in melee, at the charge, and can fire their carbines. They are not very effective in close combat on foot, leaving themselves vulnerable when acting as melee infantry.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in Confederation of New England

    - 2nd New York (United States) —
Marching or line regiments make up the majority of units in European-pattern armies. They are so-called because they form the line of battle, not because they deploy in lines. They can also form square, a particularly effective tactic against cavalry charges, although this leaves the unit incredibly vulnerable to artillery fire and skirmishers. This weakness aside, the versatility of a line regiment makes them a valuable addition to any force.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in New York

    - 33rd Foot (Britain) — The 33rd Foot are known as "The Pattern" for their stoic professionalism in battle; they are able to calmly pick targets and fire on them even while skirmishers' shots whiz by their ears, artillery shells explode around them and cavalry charges bear down upon them. To guard against such devastating enemy charges they can move from line to square formation.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding the Barracks in England

    - Brunswick Dragoons (Britain) — Brunswicker dragoons are versatile troops; they have a powerful charge that can break enemy infantry formations, and can ride to critical spots on the battlefield to lend support to beleaguered allies. However, should they be pitted against infantry formed in square their charge will fall short of the power achieved by heavy cavalry units. They do have the advantage of being armed with carbine muskets, but they are trained to use these when on foot; dragoons should not be expected to engage in close combat effectively when dismounted.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding the Barracks in England

    - Hessian Grenadiers (Britain) — Grenadiers see themselves as elite, and usually occupy the place of honour at the right of the line. They have every reason to be proud: only large, brave men become grenadiers. This size and strength makes them impressive and gives them an edge in melee combat. They are vulnerable when attacked by heavy cavalry and skirmish troops. This aside, grenadiers are dedicated soldiers who will follow orders to the letter.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding a Drill School or Military Governors Barracks in North America

    - King's Royal Regiment of New York (Britain) — This loyalist regiment is made up of line infantrymen who fire mass volleys into the main body of an enemy to break them. Once their ammunition is spent or the enemy is sufficiently weakened, they can fix bayonets and deliver a decisive charge. Because these men fight in close formation, they are vulnerable to long-range attacks by artillery and skirmishers, but they can counter cavalry charges by moving to a square formation.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding the Barracks in Upper Canada whilst having Improved Grenades technology

    - Lee's Legion (United States) — Fast moving and highly skilled, these men are truly skilled horsemen. They do not fire their carbines whilst mounted, however, preferring to ride men down and dispatch them with cold steel. These impressive collection of skills make them ideal for use against artillery and skirmishers. However, should they find themselves facing well-disciplined line infantry, formed in square, their weaknesses would swiftly become evident.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Drill School in any American province and having the Shortened Carbine technology

    - Morgan's Provisional Rifle Corp (United States) — Organized as light infantry but armed with rifles rather than smoothbore muskets, riflemen have every right to see themselves as elite. Chosen for initiative and intelligence, they do not need close supervision by their officers. These crack shots are trained for ranged combat and will be found wanting if they engage in melee. At their best in cover, their loose formation makes them a tough target for line infantry, and their uniforms allow them to blend into the landscape as they stalk their human prey.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in Virginia whilst having the Light Infantry Doctrine technology

    - Pulaski's Legion (United States) — These cavalrymen, armed with lances, have a devastating charge, which is especially effective against enemy line infantry. Pulaski's Legion is best employed to rush and break the enemy line, and then it should be pulled back for another charge before the enemy regains their senses. Despite their great initial attack, a wise commander will avoid leaving them in melee, as they are extremely vulnerable in prolonged close-combat.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as the United States and holding the Barracks in Virginia

    - Royal Deux-Ponts Regiment (France) — Line infantry are responsible for holding the line in battle, forming the backbone of the army while specialist troops harass and chip away at the enemy. Once the enemy is worn down, the regiment can rush them with a finishing bayonet charge. Their close formation gives them strength when attacking, but leaves them vulnerable to artillery and harassing skirmishers. If under threat from cavalry they can form a defensive square.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as France and holding the Barracks in Alsace-Lorraine whilst having the New Model Bayonet Drill technology

    - Royal Welch Fusiliers (Britain) — Armed with grenades and a powerful throwing arm, the Royal Welch Fusiliers are far more than your average missile troop. Their skills extend past the throwing of highly explosive projectiles, also encompassing the fine art of marksmanship, muskets being the weapon of choice. Although primarily expected to fight at range, fusiliers are also more than capable in melee and on the charge. Their only real weakness is artillery and heavy cavalry who could charge them from the flank or the rear.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding the Barracks in England whilst having the Cadenced Marching technology

    - Company of Select Marksmen/Fraser's Rangers (Britain) — Rangers are used for scouting and raiding missions far beyond the skills of ordinary men. Their ranks are mostly drawn from frontiersmen already hardened to living in the wilderness and capable of hiding in a variety of terrain types. Excellent marksmen, they excel at ranged combat but suffer in prolonged melee attacks. They are trained to conceal themselves and fight in loose formation, but if caught in the open by line infantry or cavalry they are likely to sustain heavy casualties.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain and holding the Barracks in Upper Canada

    - Tarleton's Light Dragoons (Britain) — Named for Banastre Tarleton, also known as "The Bloody Ban", these troops are ideal for countering enemies such as skirmishers and artillery. Tarleton's dragoons have fast horses and can quickly reach enemies out of range of friendly line units. Upon reaching their target, they can unleash a cavalry charge or engage in melee. Dismounted, they can use their carbines to fire upon the enemy, although they are relatively vulnerable in close-combat.
Single Player Campaign Requirements: Available when playing as Great Britain whilst holding a Military Governors Barracks in New York whilst having the Shortened Carbines technology

    - Barawardi (Maratha) — Barawardi are an elite light cavalry force. Despite wearing armour, they are surprisingly quick on the battlefield.
