The images are crisp, the colors are vivid. The characters are amusing for both children and adults. The story-line isn't anything particular new. Unlikely heroes find a lost city and end up sacrificing their own self serving goals to save the day, revealing that they truly are good people when push comes to shove. I felt that the Elton John songs were a little campy and weak, but nothing that had me sticking my fingers in my ears. A few of the numbers were very fantasia like, which I felt was out of place in this particular film. The non-fantasia like musical numbers are good. The film is cute. The characters are like-able - I in particular found myself more entertained by the horse and the armadillo at times - and intelligently done. This is one I might keep away from the littlest kids, but for the ones in school I think they can probably handle everything in the film. The Sword in the Stone Mã: This classic Disney feature, based on the children's book by T.H. White, tells the story of Wart, a young boy in medieval England who runs into the eccentric wizard Merlin. The sorcerer decides to give the boy an education, and in the process the two have a series of magical adventures. This is a Disney classic that doesn't get much attention. set amongst the young days of the good king arthur. merlin is there to and so is his very grumpy and intelligent owl name archimedes. songs everywhere. i know all the songs by heart. i watched the crap out of it when i was little. the story goes, well how Disney tells it, author is on a hunting trip with his foster family. an arrow goes astray and of coarse arthur has to go get it. it landed on the roof of merlins little house nonetheless. he falls through his roof and merlin moves to the crumbling tower of the castle keep. he educates young arthur. adventures abound and that's it. Umm, does nanyone really care? Dumas' plot, while interesting in and of itself to many, is probably not one that many folks who think of "the Three Musketters" could actually _tell_ you. This movie sets out to more or less capture the feel of such films, rather than the source material itself. In that regard, it's not too badly done. The characters are pretty broadly drawn, but adequate for the younger audience they're aimed at. Sutherland, Platt, and Sheen all seem way too young, but at least the first two are entertaining. Platt in particular manages to steal every scene he's in. By the same token, Richelieu's character is simplified to "generic bad guy." The King and Queen seem too young as well (although they're represented age may be novelistically and/or historically accurate - again, could most folks really tell you, or care?). Overall, I'd recommend the movie for some light entertainment, but don't take it too seriously. Let's start with the good things. Almost the entire cast from the first movie returns. Actually, only Mary Wickes has been replaced, which is no surprise, since she is passed away... As for the new guys: Michael McKean is average as Sarousch. (This might have been a nice role for Tim Curry, though...) Jennifer Love Hewitt is very good as Madellaine! Also, her singing voice is magnificent! Haley Joel Osment has a good role too, but isn't as good as he was in Beauty and the Beast: A Magical Christmas. Now for the bad things. Character design sucks!!! Sarousch looks uglier then Quasi himself! The music sucks too. It has absolutely nothing in common with the church music from the first movie. Also, the special effects are lousy! The bell 'La fidele' should look like it has diamonds and juwels all over it. So it could have been shining like the sun. Instead, it is badly drawn... Actually, the entire animation is done crappy... and off course, the story... It's not as bad as it could have been! But certainly not worthy for a sequel to such a great movie!!! There's so much I can say about this movie but all my comments always come down to one thing: this movie is beautiful. Pure genius. A timeless story. I might be a little biased in my beliefs, seeing as the first movie I remember seeing in theatres is "The Lion King" and I still watch it on a regular basis and know all the words but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who agree with what I have to say. "The Lion King" is beautiful; hands down, it is the best Disney film ever created. The story is something that everyone can relate to, whether they are a lion ;) or not. Simba is destined to become king one day and just can't wait to rule the throne; everyone can relate to wanting to grow up and become an adult, to do whatever they want and not have to worry about anything. His father tries to teach him that, despite the fact that he will one day be grown and king, his life will not be easy. Simba has to learn his lesson the hard way when his Uncle Scar, who, too, wants the throne, kills his father and convinces Simba that it was his fault. Suddenly, growing up doesn't seem so great anymore (I can *really* relate to that). And so, Simba flees his home and comes across Timon and Pumbaa, two other outcasts. They teach Simba the "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle, something that idealizes a life free of stress, worry and responsibility. Now, don't we all wish we could live this way? No worries for the rest of our days... But when Simba's childhood friend Nala returns, he realizes that he can't live Hakuna Matata forever, for he does have a responsibility to his pride and his homeland. Simba understands that he must grow up, as we all do, and does what's right. The songs are catchy and fit the movie well (the original songs, of course, though "The Morning Report" isn't too bad) and the score is haunting and beautiful. Along with the art work, the music captures the heart of Africa. With the types of shows that children watch these days (boy, doesn't that make me sound old?), it's a wonder they'll learn in virtues and values at all. "The Lion King" is a great teacher when it comes to learning lessons that will carry throughout their lifetime. "The Lion King" teaches children that it's all right to be a kid but you must understand and accept responsibility for things you can and cannot control. Everyone has a place in The Circle of Life and we must find it; the film also teaches that we will encounter bad and even terrible things during our lifetime but we must accept them and move on. These are important, meaningful lessons; heck, I even used them in my SAT essay! "The Lion King" is a film for every generation and is a powerful film that all children should see. I'm past my childhood now and I still watch it whenever I get the chance; I look forward to sharing it with my children. Having seen the pretty poor movie featuring Piglet I didn't hold out much hope for this film even if Tigger is one of the more fun characters of the series. However the plot is a little better than that film and the whole thing has a lot more energy to it. The basic plot is reasonable enough but it will be no surprise to anyone that lessons are there to be learned. The film moves along easy enough and is light enough to enjoy without being hard to watch. The songs are OK and aren't overdone to the point that their averageness becomes a major drag. The animation is pretty basic though and this is matched by the voice work, which doesn't really do anything and actually sounds quite bland. The film isn't great though - it's just passable enough to watch. Kids should enjoy it but even for them it may be all a bit bland and `nice' to compete with sharper cartoons. As for adults, it is unlikely that they will take much from it apart from having the kids distracted for an hour or so. Overall, fans of Pooh and all will probably enjoy this film, I liked it because it was undemanding and quite a pleasant little story. The animation is OK even if the voice work is poor and the humour of the film couldn't compete with the much sharper kids animations that are out there. Barbie Mermaidia (2006) Mã: Another excellent installment in the Barbie fantasy line of videos. Fun story, music, characters, animation. Skip the line of toys associated with it and just enjoy the movie! Fun for girls from ages 2 to 10. Barbie comes back to save the day in Mermaida. She has to decide what is more important keeping her wings or saving her friend. Well you should know what she decides, but all turns out great in the end. This follow up to Barbie Fairytopia was another attempt of Mattel to recapture the magic of the original Barbie movies. I found this movie to actually be superior to Fairytopia. The plot and character developpment were terrible, but the story is very magical, which made it great for little kids, and the kid in all of us. Lately the Barbie movies have been taking a step away from sexism by showing young girls that they don't have to depend on a man, because Elina, the main character does not, and she saves her home and friendsfrom danger. The whole story is very cheesy, but that is exactly what makes these movies so great. They aren't aiming for an Oscar, but just to entertain the viewers, which I thought this movie definitely did. Asterix vs Caesar (1985) Mã: As bob the moo notes, "Asterix et la surprise de Cesar" (or "Asterix Vs. Caesar" in English) is based on two of the Asterix books. The problem with this movie is that the books in question - "Asterix the Gladiator" and "Asterix the Legionnary" - are two of the best of the lot, and either one would have made a good tale on its own, but in adapting them as one movie screenwriter Pierre Tchernia didn't do either one any favours, in addition to throwing in some odd new material (check out the attendant at the sauna Obelix visits at one point - the indication that the former is... um... checking out the latter is a bit out of place among the sternly heterosexual series). The animation is okay, but nothing to write home about; and hearing the inhabitants of the small village of indomitable Gauls speak with American accents is distracting (though not as distracting as "Asterix Conquers America," the worst of the animated movies, which had our hero speaking in the Liverpudlian tones of Craig Charles in the English release). And note the presence of Plastic Bertrand singing over the opening and end credits (insert famous Belgian joke here). The earlier films in the series, especially "Asterix and Cleopatra" and "The Twelve Tasks of Asterix," are better; and it's a tough call on whether this or the live-action "Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar" is preferable - in terms of bringing the characters to the screen and in terms of entertainment and competence this one is, but then again this one doesn't have Laetitia Casta... Land Before Time #11 - Invasion Of the Tinysaurus Mã: I have loyally collected each instalment of this cute animated adventure & this is one of the best. Littlefoot discovers that even a little lie can have dire consequences & the importance of owning up. While heavy on the moral issues at times, this is an exciting story with romance on the side. Friendship is tested to the limits, but there is laughter to balance the tension. The "Tinysauruses" are a colourful bunch who just want to have fun and feed, but are misunderstood by the Great Valley inhabitants. Three of them play essential roles in the drama that unfolds. Plus a tender hearted Threehorn called Tria. Three songs too. This series continues to impress & no doubt there'll be more. BUT IT'S WRONG! If at all, this is a *parody* of that kind of cartoons and it appeals to a different (and probably smaller) audience. This is obvious in "Cartoon canines" episode: the two dogs learn how to be "funny", Ren and Stimpy way, in an army camp (Drill Sergeant: "No cutesy in my corp, only funny cartoons! You know, lots of butt jokes!"). If i recall correctly, at one time the dogs even morph into something very close to Ren and Stimpy! From the drawing style i suspect this is one of the first episodes to be conceived, even if it was aired later. 2 stupid dogs was made with a deceptively innocent animation style: smooth shapes, reassuring colors, attention to detail. The jazzy soundtrack is perfect, and the sound effects are purposefully unrelated to the action they try to describe. The stories are not silly, but minimal (some episodes can be narrated in one sentence) with exaggerated particulars. They can be poetic, satyric, just plain silly and, parents beware, with some extremely sick or revolting details. Usually i can't stand revolting stuff that I usually perceive as a cheap way to make things interesting by tickling istinct, but here it's just the authors' fantasy running amok. I enjoy every single episode. Nobody dare to miss the one in black and white! Little Dog is the best characterization of a little dog i have ever seen. Big Dog, my personal fave, seems just a lazy glutton, but when he decides to talk... listen to him as a foreign ambassador ("Drop all cares about politics, business, and the foreign situation. You will be astonished to find the world will manage to struggle on, somehow.") The big man and Red are awesome too! gee... better i stop writing this and watch a Two stupid dogs videotape for the hundredth time.
